Runner up - Ropsley 10 Miles (3/7/09)
Channel Relay Swim, 2009
| We did it!!!! in 15 hours and 32
mins.........
Puffing, panting and spluttering (!) Jack Harmer, Caroline Evans, Simon Mountain, Judy Kiely, Robert Hodgson and Hannah Whitney swum across (what seemed like!) a very big and rolling English Channel as a relay team on the 26th July 2009. The team set off from Dover harbour in the early hours of Sunday morning onboard Alison Streeter's (MBE) boat 'Roco' (Alison has swum the channel 43 times-solo) with a fantastic crew and official observer from the Channel Swimming and Piloting Federation. The first swimmer (Robert) was in the water at 1:21 am followed by Simon, Hannah, Judy, Caz and Jack-each of us doing one hour legs in succession of the relay. As a team we are raising money for 'Janes Appeal' and 'CAAPAS' Raising Awareness for Autism. |

The Task To form a relay team to swim the English Channel. The Team Swimmers: Caroline Evans, Hannah Whitney (aged 31), Jack Harmer (aged 46), Judy Kiely (aged 52), Robert Hodgson (aged 49) and Simon Mountain (aged 31). Pilot: Alison Streeter. When 18th – 27th July 2009 (spring tide). These are provisional dates. As with all things to do with the Channel, it is down to the weather at the time. The Blurb We are hoping to swim the Channel as a relay team. Each of us will swim for an hour and then hand over to the next swimmer. We hope to cross in 12 to 14 hours, so we’ll each be doing at least two sessions and swimming for around four miles in all. (It’s about 21 miles across in a straight line, but the tide will sweep us up and down the Channel, making the distance covered anything up to 26 miles or more.) We will have a support boat, and we hope Alison Streeter, the “Queen of the Channel”, who has swum the Channel 43 times herself, will be our pilot. Most of our training will be carried out in the pool and we also have three open-water training sessions planned: the Lake District, good old Skeggy, and finally a trip down to Dover to meet up with other Channel hopefuls and to train in Dover Harbour. The Photos These photos show our first team meeting Caz, Hannah, Jack and Robert (Judy hadn’t joined the team at that stage) swam at Skeggy in October last year. The water was 10oC! We swam for all of 5 minutes and thought we’d done well until we heard that Simon, who was away that weekend, managed 20 minutes in the sea at Dover on the same day!
